The book is written by the danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen and is the first in the "Department Q"-series. The original title of the book is "Kvinden i buret", which is directly translated to "The woman in the cage". The book got a Barry Award in 2012, and was adapted to a movie in 2013.

Carl Mørck was one of the best homicide detectives in Copenhagen until a traumatic shooting took place. Two colleagues had their life destroyed, and Carl blames himself for this. He has never been the same since the shooting, but nevertheless he get’s a promotion; He becomes head of department Q, which is a one-man department investigating Copenhagen’s coldest cases. It seems like every case is impossible to solve, until he notices a case about a liberal politician disappearing five years ago. Although she is presumed dead long ago, it does look like she may be alive...

First of all, I though this series was a typical crime-series with an inspector solving mysteries. The classic set-up that I personally find so similar to each other, it takes two books and you grow tired of it. I decided to give the book a try anyways, and I was in for a surprise. This book is more of a thriller than a crime-book and I found it both funny (I actually laughed out loud several times) and really exciting. Adler-Olsen writes in a way that every time you think that you’ll just read one more chapter, you end up reading at least three chapters. Carl Mørck is also a very cool character with dark humor and a bit of a sarcastic attitude. His side-kick Hafez el-Hassad is also a cool character. Everyone who likes crime/thriller books. I’d guess the suitable age is 18-60.
